According to WENN, the Inglourious Basterds actor was engulfed in waves during a kayaking expedition and then stung 200 times by sea urchins.
He was one mile from shore when he was pulled into a sinkhole off the coast of Careyes ten days ago.
To escape, Roth climbed a rock that was covered in sea urchins, which unleashed the deadly spikes into his body. A nearby fisherman then came to his rescue.
The Hostel director told TMZ that doctors couldn't anaesthetise his foot because of swelling and were forced to pluck the spikes out with a pair of tweezers.
The recovering star still plans to attend the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday night.
