Martha Stewart let out of jail
Published Friday, Mar 4 2005, 13:12 GMT | By Neil Wilkes
Homemaking guru Martha Stewart was released from prison in the early hours of this morning.
The 63-year-old had been jailed in Alderson, West Virginia for the last five months after being convicted for lying about the sale of shares in a drugs company.
She will now complete her remaining five month sentence from her 153-acre estate in New York. She has been fitted with an electronic anklet to ensure she remains inside the compound, but is being allowed to leave her home for up to 48 hours a week in order to work, shop or run other approved errands.
"The experience of the last five months ... has been life altering and life affirming," said Stewart in a statement. "Someday, I hope to have the chance to talk more about all that has happened, the extraordinary people I have met here and all that I have learned.
"I can tell you now that I feel very fortunate to have had a family that nurtured me, the advantage of an excellent education, and the opportunity to pursue the American dream. You can be sure that I will never forget the friends that I met here, all that they have done to help me over these five months, their children, and the stories they have told me.
"Right now, as you can imagine, I am thrilled to be returning to my more familiar life. My heart is filled with joy at the prospect of the warm embraces of my family, friends and colleagues. Certainly, there is no place like home."
Among the TV projects she already has lined up are a new series of her daily homemaking show and her own version of corporate reality show The Apprentice.
