The incident occurred just before 10pm as Boyle returned home with a friend following a trip to London to record her contribution to Simon Cowell's Haiti charity single, The Sun claims.
It is believed that the male intruder was on the stairs as Boyle entered her house with her friend. He is then said to have turned and fled past the singer.
A source said: "Susan is unharmed but is obviously very, very shocked."
It is unclear whether Boyle ended up staying the night at her home in Blackburn, West Lothian as planned.
A spokesperson for Lothian and Borders Police confirmed: "Police were called to an address at around 9.50pm this evening following reports of a disturbance."
The representative added that a man was being held in relation to the matter.
