Richie and Madden open new playground

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden were present at the opening of a new playground in downtown Los Angeles yesterday.

The couple pledged to raise funds for the playground, situated in a low income housing project called Beyond Shelter, in September 2008 through the Richie-Madden Children's Foundation.

"When we first started coming here, there were no kids outside," said Richie to People. "To see the place come to life and have a place to come outside and be kids, and have their imaginations run wild, it's really awesome."

The Richie-Madden Children's Foundation was created in 2008, after the birth of the couple's first child Harlow. Richie gave birth to the couple's second baby Sparrow in September 2009.

The Foundation, which strives to give opportunities to disadvantaged children, recently partnered with 7-11 to donate $250,000 to charity.
