Douglas's son Cameron recently pleaded guilty to trafficking methamphetamine and cocaine and could face life imprisonment.
Michael has now told The Sun that his personal problems and heavy workload affected his son.
"There were a tough few years in the Nineties," he said. "I lost my stepfather. My dad had that crash and then a stroke. There were the marital issues. Obviously I had issues with my oldest son Cameron. I'd been working too hard and my mother had cancer problems.
"It was coming at me every which way for a while. It gives you a deeper appreciation for when things are good."
He added: "It would have been better if I had been around more. Now my son's in a federal prison. Any family who has dealt with substance abuse knows how devastating it can be. But he recognises his own demons and struggles. He has a lot of life ahead."
The actor, who has two children with his second wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, explained that he is determined not to make the same mistakes again.
"I'm no longer obsessed about work and I've been enjoying time with my family," he said. "I'm not consumed with my career so I'm a better dad second time round."
