A charity organisation has defended comments made by John Mayer, according to People.

The Isaac Foundation, an organisation that raises money for children with a rare enzyme deficiency known as MPS VI, claimed that Mayer is a "kind, caring and compassionate person". The 32-year-old singer was recently criticised for apparently racist comments he made in an interview with Playboy.

"I don't care what Playboy magazine writes about the man, and I don't care what John says to the journalists that write what they do about him," said Andrew McFadyen, founder of The Isaac Foundation. "In America, it's all part of the game."

Mayer has been a generous contributor to the organisation and even spent time with the group's namesake, a 4-year-old boy with MPS VI and his father McFadyen.

"I know he's said things that make him sound like someone you would never want your children around – ever," McFadyen said. "But I also know the person that he truly is and the good things he tries to accomplish with the celebrity status he's achieved."

Mayer has gone into hiding since the interview was published. He recently broke his silence to link to the The Isaac Foundation on his blog.
