The singer, who released debut album For Your Entertainment in November, told AOL Music Sessions that "everything has changed" since he finished runner-up on the Fox show.
"It's funny because I look back a year ago and my life was normal - by my standards, it felt normal. If anybody was looking at it they'd probably still think I'm a strange bird!" he joked.
"Everything has changed so much, 180-degrees difference. I just go with it, I'm really excited. I feel like I've been working so hard for so many years, trying to grow as an artist and get to a certain point in my career."
He added: "Now I have, because I put so much work and energy into it, I feel like I do deserve this. I worked really hard, so that helps."
Lambert, who performed an exclusive showcase for AOL, recently reunited with former Idol stars Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta for a one-off performance in New York.
