The 30-year-old actor, who stars with wife Anne-Marie Duff in The Last Station, said that he thinks she has become a better actress with age.
McAvoy told The Scotsman: "I've always been intimidated by how good an actress she is - and no less now.
"Especially after watching the last two things she did - playing Margot Fonteyn in the BBC production Margot and playing John Lennon's mum in Nowhere Boy. She was just incredible."
Talking about Duff's pregnancy, McAvoy said he feels: "Excited, nervous, the usual emotions, I suppose. The usual healthy emotions. Excited and all that."
