Victim Chris Corder, 42, is still in a coma following the accident, which took place when defendant Boyd was delivering church newsletters in Hadleigh in September last year.
Ipswich Crown Court heard that Boyd had hit Corder as he turned around in his car to comfort his 4-year-old son, before driving away upon realising what he had done.
Boyd admitted to charges of failure to stop at an accident scene as well as his previous admission of dangerous driving, and was handed down a 12-month sentence, BBC News reports.
Following the verdict, Corder's sister Jennie blasted the judge for what she considered to be a lenient punishment.
"I really would have liked him to get a longer sentence," she said. "Six months of somebody's life is nothing compared to what my brother is going to have to live through and what we are going to live through.
"My parents might never see my brother awake again and that's a horrible thought. I do not think that man has any remorse."
