The supermodel told BBC News that she is now trying to use her celebrity to help people and added that she has been "quietly" working with charities for several years.
"My whole generation of girls, we never thought about celebrity," she said. "Didn't enter our vocabulary. We just liked our jobs, liked working, liked travelling the world."
She revealed that Nelson Mandela had urged her to help people in 1992 but admitted: "At 22 years old I didn't really quite understand what that meant."
Campbell also said that she is "honoured" to work with the prime minister's wife Sarah Brown, adding that she is an "amazing woman".
Campbell recently announced that she is planning a trip to Haiti to help survivors of last month's earthquake.
