According to SciFiWire, the Life of Pi author was sent the note after Obama and one of his daughters had finished reading the novel.
Obama wrote: "My daughter and I just finished reading Life of Pi together. Both of us agreed we prefer the story with animals. It is a lovely book - an elegant proof of God and the power of storytelling."
The book centres on a young boy and a group of animals shipwrecked on an island.
Director Ang Lee is currently working on adapting the fantasy story into a film.
