Speaking to People, Madden explained that he hopes he will be able to create a good atmosphere at the event.
"I'm just there to keep the vibe," he said. "In between the show and in between people going up and accepting awards there's a lot of dead space and a lot of dead air, so I'll just be there trying to keep it light and keep it fun."
Madden, who said that he is "definitely not taking it lightly", explained that he is not responsible for playing music to cut off long acceptance speeches.
"I would love it if that was my job," he joked. "I don't think that will be me, but that would be the best part of the night for me."
Madden also revealed that he normally spends Oscar night watching the awards at home with his wife Nicole Richie.
"This is going to be a nice night out for us," he said. "For us it's usually about making popcorn at home, betting who we think is going to win. She's usually right all the time."
The 2010 Academy Awards will be televised live tonight on ABC at 5pm PT/8pm ET in the US and from 1am on Sky Movies Premiere in the UK.
