Hayes, who played the flamboyant character Jack McFarland on the NBC show, opened up about his sexuality in a recent interview with The Advocate.
The gay news magazine had long criticised Hayes for not openly addressing his sexual orientation.
"I never have had a problem saying who I am," Hayes said. "I am who I am. I was never in, as they say. Never."
Hayes claimed that he was open to close friends and family.
"You are your authentic self to whom and when you choose to be," he stated. "And if you don't know somebody, then why would you explain to them how you live your life?"
The actor admitted that he is still hesitant about revealing too much information about his personal life.
"I spend time with a special someone in my life," he said. "That's all I need... I don't do a lot. I live my life like an 85-year-old man. I'm just quiet. It's fantastic."
Hayes will star in the upcoming Broadway musical Promises, Promises with Kristen Chenowith.
