Molly Ringwald has credited her daughter with helping her to choose a dress for the Oscars.

The Sixteen Candles actress paid tribute to the late director John Hughes at the Academy Awards on Sunday night.

Ringwald, who appeared in an asymmetrical royal blue Todd Thomas gown, claimed that she consulted her 6-year-old daughter Mathilda in place of a stylist.

"I was choosing between two dress colours, and she decided on this," Ringwald told People. "She said this was the way to go. I always listen to her, she's a 6-year-old fashionista."

The 42-year-old accented her gown with jewellery from designer Alexander Calder.

"It's a huge honour to wear his jewellery. I feel very honoured," she added.

Ringwald recently appeared in ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
