Lil Wayne 'begins serving jail sentence'

Lil Wayne has reportedly arrived at Rikers Island in New York City, where he is to serve a one-year jail sentence for gun possession.

According to People, the rapper arrived at the prison complex early this morning following his sentencing yesterday.

In October, the 27-year-old pleaded guilty to weapons charges relating to his arrest in 2007, when a gun was found on his tour bus.

Reports suggest that Lil Wayne is likely to be released in eight months' time if he behaves well in prison.

His lawyer Stacey Richman said yesterday: "He knew what he had to do, and he's doing it."

The star - real name Dwayne Carter - has reportedly been placed in protective custody away from other inmates. He recently vowed to keep writing songs while behind bars.
