The singer was widely criticised for her fluctuating weight and, specifically, photos of her in an unflattering outfit at a 2009 chili cook-off.
"I was embarrassed. I didn't want to show my face", she said on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show on Tuesday. "I was touring with the Rascal Flatts at the time and had to get on stage every day and kind of just face it and hope to God I wasn't wearing an unflattering outfit... Obviously, I didn't look like Daisy Duke."
Simpson added that the experience was the inspiration behind her upcoming reality show The Price of Beauty, in which she explores different cultural perceptions of beauty.
After filming the series, the star stated that she finally feels "comfortable in [her] own skin".
The Price of Beauty premieres on March 15 on VH1.
