The 38-year-old singer said, "I need to sort things out", as he admitted himself to a clinic after saying goodbye to his wife of six months Emma and their children Elwood, 3, and Willow Rose, 1.
Earlier this week, Owen admitted that he had cheated on his wife with around ten women before their wedding last year.
He has since said that he does not blame his ongoing drink problem for his infidelities. "I've made my bed and I've got to lie in it. I was very lucky to marry Emma because I've not always been a great partner," Owen said.
"I have had issues for a long time. I've drunk for the last ten years and it got to a bad point. That's been my issue. I have been a prat."
Robbie Williams has been helping Owen to overcome his addiction, while Take That bandmates Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Jason Orange have said that he can temporarily bow out of the group to seek help.
"There is absolutely no time pressure. They will press on with recording a new album with Robbie and when Mark's ready to come back, the door is open," a source said.
