Edwards admitted to an affair with Rielle Hunter in 2008 and later revealed that he had fathered a child with the actress, who he first met in 2006.
"We love each other very much. And that hasn't changed, and I believe that will be till death do us part," Hunter told GQ.
"Our connection is profound. He in fact did say to me the first night, 'Falling in love with you could really f**k up my plans for becoming President'."
"And my surprise was that they stayed in the race," Hunter added. "I was shocked. I really viewed it as reckless.
"They asked a lot of questions about the sex tape. I hope she and Johnny and [his wife] Elizabeth and their families can find happiness so that we all can move on with our lives."
The politician separated from Elizabeth after she met his love child.
