Hunter, who has a child with politician John Edwards, was reportedly shocked by the images that were chosen to accompany her interview with the magazine.
In one picture, Hunter rests on a bed with her stomach exposed, while in others she is seen wearing just a shirt.
Speaking on The View, Barbara Walters claimed that Hunter had been "in tears" over the photographs.
"[She] screamed for two hours," Walters said. "She said she found the photographs repulsive... She said she trusted Mark Seliger, whom she said is a brilliant photographer and quote, 'I went with the flow'."
Walters added: "[She] thought that having one of those photos was okay and would be sexy and that there were others that were just beautiful headshots, but that GQ picked photos to hit one note."
However, GQ reporter Lisa DePaulo told Good Morning America that she doesn't believe Hunter was shocked by the photographs.
"Did she say she thought they would be headshots?" DePaulo asked. "Rielle is a smart woman. She knows what she wore and what she was doing in the photoshoot."
GQ also released footage from the photoshoot which showed the videographer asking Hunter if she wanted to have a look at the images.
