The actor, who plays Inspector Robbie Lewis on the show, won a talent contest in the 1960s before deciding that the music industry was not for him.
"When I left school we went to Donegral in North-West Ireland and had a residence in the local pub," he told TV Times. "The band had many names; I think we called ourselves Byfolkal when we went to Ireland.
"We listened to a lot of Irish songs and learned to play them to expand our repertoire. But then it all fizzled out when we came home. We did win a talent contest, though, and made a TV appearance."
The 59-year-old added: "After that, the '60s were over and I knew I had to go out and get myself a proper job."
Lewis will return to ITV1 later this year.
