The Good Life star, who is currently playing a 19th century prostitute in West End play Mrs Warren's Profession, explained that people expect women to be "perfect".
"Clever women can't be too beautiful," she told The Daily Telegraph. "They've got to be perfect and they must be completely squeaky clean. It is nonsense.
"If a woman chooses something that isn't respectable she is still reviled and still accused. It is not fair to judge a woman just because she looks great and uses whatever she's got to be successful."
She continued: "They happen to be prostitutes [in the play] but we live in a kind of crazy society at the moment where we have these rules that just don't work and the people that get blamed are the women."
Kendal recently revealed that she would love to get more tattoos in the future.
