Hurley launched her own swimwear line in 2002, followed by a diet snack enterprise last year. Currently promoting her "guilt-free" organic beef jerky, Hurley revealed to The Times that she has survived in business because she thrives on pressure and strives to reach her goals.
"I'm firm but fair," she said of her leadership style, adding: "But you know what, I’m probably not the best person to have shrinking violets around me. We all have to work extremely hard. It's hopeless if someone can't bear it. I thrive under pressure and am less good if it’s calm."
Hurley, who lives with her 8-year-old son Damian and husband Arun Nayar, said that she has also become ruthless when it comes to self-promotion.
"I wouldn't do a public appearance at Harrods unless Harrods was selling something of mine," she said, explaining that living in America taught her to speak up for herself.
Hurley also explained the reason behind choosing beef jerky for her business: "The fact is, most slimming stuff on the market is horrific. To keep the calories down it has hydrogenated fat and really unpleasant things. Or it's for the hairy-toe brigade. I love the good life, but I don’t want to eat disgusting green seeds the whole time. I want stuff to be fun and nice."
