Coldplay have tricked their fans with an April Fools' Day joke.

The band wrote on their website this morning that they had launched a new fragrance called Angst.

"This is something we've wanted to do for a long time," band member Chris Martin said. "People like to smell nice and we thought we could help them out."

The message also claimed that Martin agreed that there are "bigger and better scents" but that the group created an aroma they enjoyed.

"If anyone else likes it, then that's a bonus," Martin added.

The fragrance was also said to come in bottles designed by producer Brian Eno, while the scent was allegedly sourced from Fair Trade suppliers. However, the ingredients listed - sangre, sudor and lágrimas - are all foreign words for "sweat".

Fans who wanted to buy the scent, priced at £42, could click through to the band's official merchandise page but were told that the product was out of stock.
