The Fringe star explained that thespians get stuck in a "time warp" based on when they became celebrities.
"We're getting to a place where the tail is wagging the dog," he told Parade.
"We no longer allow young actors the benefit of ten or 15 years before they're expected to be Tom Cruise. Cruise had to build up his life and career, and so did Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. Jack Nicholson was in his early 30s before he became Jack Nicholson. It breaks my heart."
Jackson continued: "I see really, really talented people who became stuck at a certain age, like 19 or 20, because they suddenly become stars. They're in a time warp and you completely remove their ability to change and grow. Eventually, you have a 35-year-old who's acting like they're 19, which isn't good."
However, the former Dawson's Creek star admitted that acting is like a drug to him.
"There is a narcotic effect to being in a good scene with a good actor that is unlike anything I can possibly describe to you if you haven't done it," he explained. "And it is why I've done it for years."
