DS Icon: Paul Hendy
Published Friday, Apr 9 2010, 06:00 BST | By Alex Fletcher
Not many people remember Paul Hendy. The name may cause you to pause for a moment, but little more than that. Hendy confesses himself that he never quite made the heights of C-list celebrity status even during his '90s pomp, so it's hardly surprising if you've forgotten his cheeky grin and ginger locks. But here at DS, we look back fondly at the brief era when Hendy ruled the box with TV hits such as The Disney Club, Saturday morning kids classic Parallel 9 and student favourite Stash The Cash.
A versatile performer with an off-the-cuff sense of humour and natural rapport, current presenters like Ant & Dec and Fearne Cotton aren't qualified enough to clean his boots when it comes to the sphere of light entertainment. Sadly, Hendy's stabs at the mainstream were limited. He took over the helm of ITV classic Wheel Of Fortune only for the show to be dropped after just one year in his hands, while his stint on Don't Try This At Home (remember the Hendy's Shoppers' Challenge game?!) was watered down by co-presenters Davina McCall and the frankly awful Kate Thornton. These days, Hendy can be found hosting corporate events and penning novels about "sad, bitter and twisted celebrities, whose careers have seen better days". It's good to know he's kept his sense of humour!
