The Survivor producer had reported his wife missing in the resort city of Cancun on Tuesday night, The AP reports.
On Wednesday morning, Monica's body was found in a sewer. Beresford-Redman was taken into police custody for questioning the following day.
Outgoing state attorney general Bello Rodriguez said that said that a security guard at the Moon Palace, the resort where the Beresford-Redman family were staying, witnessed the couple violently arguing on Sunday.
New state attorney general Francisco Alor said that Bruce was being held as a "person of interest", rather than a suspect at present, adding: "He's the initial focus of the investigation based on their alleged turbulent relationship."
The official claimed that doctors had determined that Monica died from a asphyxiation or a blow to the head, with her body showing damage to her right temple and scratches on her neck.
Alor added: "What we need to determine is whether that blow was from falling into the sewer."
Beresford-Redman is a three-time Emmy Award-nominated television producer and credited for co-creating the MTV series Pimp My Ride.
