Ross Kemp has written a newspaper article calling for the public to vote Labour in the general election.

The former EastEnders star said that the upcoming election should not be treated like a "beauty contest" or The X Factor and claimed that the the Conservative Party would create "desperation" and "anger" if they were elected.

"I'm sure David Cameron is a nice man. So is Gordon Brown. But that isn't the issue here. It's about who is the best man to lead our country. And I for one believe that man to be Gordon Brown," he wrote in The Mirror.

He also called on the public to make sure they voted on May 6, adding: "On my travels around the world, I've met people in countries where democracy doesn't exist and if it does, they are intimidated into voting in a certain way. The right to vote is something our forefathers had to fight for. Don't squander their legacy."

Yesterday, veteran actor Michael Caine joined David Cameron on the Conservative's campaign trail.
