Roman Polanski has reportedly appealed to President Obama asking to be spared jail time.

The filmmaker is currently under house arrest in Switzerland and faces a US arrest warrant for his conviction of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

According to French magazine L'Express, French president Nicolas Sarkozy delivered a handwritten note from Polanski to Obama earlier this month.

The article claimed: "Nicolas Sarkozy hand-delivered a letter from Roman Polanski to Barack Obama last week on the sidelines of the anti-nuclear proliferation summit in Washington."

A California appeals court recently dismissed Polanski's request to have a special counsel review his decades-old child sex case.

The award-winning director is set to be extradited to the US after the bid was rejected.
