The Duke of Edinburgh is recovering after reportedly sustaining a "minor" ankle injury when his carriage collided with a tree stump.

Prince Philip was driving the carriage at the Windsor estate on Friday when the accident took place, PA reports.

A spokeswoman at Buckingham Palace said that the Duke, 88, was "out and about as normal" following the incident and did not require hospital treatment. A female groom in the carriage at the time injured her elbow.

"The female groom who was with the Duke has been to hospital for diagnosis for an injury to her elbow. The ponies pulling the carriage were recovered unharmed," she said.

The accident happened as a result of the ponies leading the carriage apparently "running away".
