According to The Herald, Tunstall's stepfather David Orr has been a member of the far right party for nearly a decade, and is now running for office in the town of Livingston, West Lothian. He has been married to Tunstall's mother Carol Ann since 1989.
Carol Ann - who is half-Chinese and was born in Hong Kong - is believed to have nominated her husband as a BNP candidate. She reportedly gave Tunstall up for adoption several days after she was born, although they eventually reunited in 2006.
Speaking of his relationship with the singer, Orr said: "Katie (KT) doesn't agree with our policies. She's one of the greenies, the yoghurt knitters."
He added: "We see Katie when she's up on tour. When she found out that I was standing for the British National Party, it was a quick stand back."
Tunstall is now understood to have disowned Orr since receiving the news. "She abhors the BNP and all they stand for," her spokesperson told the publication. "She now has no contact with David Orr."
