The Underbelly star, who is believed to be engaged to Transformers actress Rachael Taylor, is currently receiving treatment in Melbourne for a rumoured drug and alcohol addiction.
Matthew's father Bert Newton, who is scheduled to present the Logie Awards next month, told The Daily Telegraph: "We want what's best for Matthew and we are with him all the way."
Close friend Jillian Bowen added: "Matthew is in hospital at the moment, but we do ask people to understand that this is a private time and we won't be discussing any details."
In 2006, Matthew was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond after being charged with assaulting his then-girlfriend, Neighbours actress Brooke Satchwell. Since then, he has been accused of trashing hotel rooms on two occasions.
