Ricky Gervais has been named among Time magazine's annual 100 most influential people list.

In the last 12, months the Extras comedian has hosted the Golden Globes, released the film Cemetery Junction and adapted his popular podcasts into animated comedy The Ricky Gervais Show. He has also been touring his 'Science' and 'Out Of England' shows in the US and UK.

Speaking about the magazine's recognition for his work, the comic said: "I am both flattered and honoured. I promise to use my powers for good and not evil. And I declare 1st of May, World Gervais Day. Thank you."

Time managing editor Rick Stengel said: "The Time 100 is not a list of the most powerful people in the world, it's not a list of the smartest people in the world, it's a list of the most influential people in the world.

"They're scientists, they're thinkers, they're philosophers, they're leaders, they're icons, they're artists, they're visionaries. People who are using their ideas, their visions, their actions to transform the world and have an effect on a multitude of people."
