Writing these DS Icon tributes can sometimes be a dispiriting affair. When researching our childhood heroes and idols, we often discover that they have hit hard times, with only the money from regular panto slots and Challenge TV re-runs to keep them above the breadline. So it made a pleasant change this week to find out that the TV funnyman Andrew O'Connor's fortunes haven't dwindled, despite a lack of screen time in recent years.
After lighting up telly boxes for years with his zany wit and quickfire humour, he has now proved to be a hit behind the camera as well. It's a crying shame that the man who brought us so many laughs on the likes of Chain Letters, The Alphabet Game, Happy Families and Family Catchphrase is no longer the face of clean Saturday night family fun, especially as that means we now have to endure Vernon Kay every weekend. But it is also a relief to hear that rather than doing Dick Whittington with Frank Bruno and Su Pollard in Gravesend, he is instead raking in the cash as a writer and exec producer on credible series such as Peep Show and Derren Brown: The Events.
