Richard Madeley has claimed that his daughter's driving ban was the "best thing" for her in the end.

The 53-year-old presenter, who was furious after she was charged with drink-driving last year, had previously warned her of the bad press she would receive.

He told the Sunday Mirror: "In some ways the drink-driving thing was the best thing that happened to Chloe. She took her responsibilities on the chin, she didn't think she was over the limit, but she didn't make any excuses for herself. I'm actually quite proud of her.

"She was mortified for me and Judy, she thought it exposed us, which it didn't. But she apologised to everyone. Now she's working hard. It was a wake-up call and she responded brilliantly."

Richard added: "She's never been a wild child. I still don't care about that picture of her smoking pot all those years ago. It's not as if it was crack or crystal meth.

"But before her brush with the law she was a little bit too relaxed about everything. This has set her straight. She's a good kid."
