Carey Hall of Fame award causes outrage

Wayne Carey's new status in the AFL's Hall of Fame has caused outrage among women's groups.

The Australian sports star, who was charged with glassing his girlfriend in 2007, has been nominated to be inducted into the Hall of Fame next month.

Advocate against sexual assault Marg D'Arcy told the Herald Sun: "I think it's appalling given his record. He has shown no evidence of having any level of respect for women, no indication he's learnt his lesson or been held accountable."

AFL club director Beverly O'Connor added: "I would have liked to see a bit more water under the bridge first. He is far more aware of himself and his actions than ever but these things take time and I don't think he is there yet."

Carey's former coach Denis Pagan insisted that it was a positive step for the former drug addict, saying: "I think it would be good for Wayne. Wayne is a good friend of mine. He knows what I think about him."

Members of the public have posted complaints on the Herald Sun website, saying that he "should be inducted into the Hall of Shame and not the Hall of Fame".
