Legal troubles for Martin Bashir?

High Court proceedings may be resumed against Martin Bashir regarding the Living With Michael Jackson documentary.

Proceedings were brought against Granada, which produced the programme, for breach of contract and breach of confidence, but these actions were halted until the conclusion of Michael Jackson's child molestation trial.

Although Jackson hoped that Bashir's documentary, including scenes of the star's private life over an eight-month period, would bring new life to his career, it sparked investigations into his alleged inappropriate behaviour towards 13-year-old Gavin Arviso.

Jackson was then left feeling betrayed when the final edit of the documentary portrayed an unfavourable view of him. The BBC quotes him as saying in the wake of the broadcast in 2003: "I trusted Martin Bashir to come into my life and that of my family because I wanted the truth to be told.

"I feel more betrayed than perhaps ever before; that someone who had got to know my children, my staff and me, whom I let into my heart and told the truth, could then sacrifice the trust I placed in him and produce this terrible and unfair programme."

An ITV spokesman said of the current situation: "Michael Jackson issued widely publicised proceedings against Granada in 2003 alleging breach of contract and making copyright complaints which we vigorously defended.

"We are absolutely still standing by that stance and the contents of the documentary."
