Shulman, a bit actor, was seen on Saturday with a friend pulling down and walking off with the mural, according to the New York Post.
Ownership of the piece has been claimed by Ken Hart of H&H Building, who has promised not to press charges should it be returned.
"If he brings me back the art, it's over," said Hart. "But if he doesn't, I'm going to the police to report it stolen!"
Hathaway's previous boyfriend Raffaello Follieri is still serving time in prison for a multi-million dollar investment scam.
