Miley Cyrus's jewellery line has been removed from shelves at Walmart stores after it was found to be contaminated.

According to E Online, the pieces were found to contain cadmium, a highly poisonous metal that can be toxic if swallowed by young children.

A representative for the star released a statement on Wednesday which insisted that the jewellery, which was designed in collaboration with designer Max Azria, was "designed for and marketed to older audiences" and is sold in the women's section of the store.

"Miley Cyrus & Max Azria jewellery is not intended for children, but as part of our unwavering commitment to protecting the safety of children, we are removing all of the jewellery from sale while we investigate its compliance with our children's jewellery standard," the statement read.

The pieces will undergo further safety testing before returning to shelves.
