Lopez, Crowe raise funds for AIDS charity

Stars including Jennifer Lopez, Russell Crowe and Mick Jagger helped raise $6.7m (£4.6m) for AIDS research at a gala on Thursday.

Celebrities auctioned off ten lavish gifts at amfAR's annual fundraising party during the Cannes Film Festival, reports Reuters.

Guests paid between $4,000 (£2,700) to $13,000 (£9,000) for a three-course meal, wine and champagne and an after-dinner party by the swimming pool at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.

Alan Cumming led the event as regular host Sharon Stone was unable to attend. Stone greeted guests through a video message.

Patti Smith and Mary J. Blige performed, and they both agreed to play an encore after someone offered to donate $245,000 (£170,000) to the charity.
