Charlotte Church's 28-year-old partner was sailing alone in waters about one mile off Portland, Dorset, when the £800,000 motoryacht got into trouble.
According to the Sunday Mirror, the Welsh rugby star placed the boat on autopilot and was not at the helm of the vessel despite visibility being so poor. When his navigation equipment failed, he called Weymouth Coastguard and a lifeboat was scrambled to tow PDV Sketchy to safety.
A source said: "The boat was almost out of petrol so he did the right thing in raising the alarm. But what was of real concern was that visibility was pretty poor yet he was travelling on autopilot. Where you can see less than three miles, you are meant to be in control yourself."
Earlier this year, Church alerted emergency services after a dinghy tendered to the yacht slipped free. It was later discovered after it ran aground on some rocks.
