Tom Cruise has said that David Beckham could be picked to play for England in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Beckham was axed from the national squad in 2006 but recalled the following year. He was tipped to be part of coach Fabio Capello's plans for the 2010 tournament in South Africa but was forced to withdraw with a torn Achilles tendon.

According to The Sun, Beckham's friend Cruise believes that the footballer could regain his fitness and form to play in four years time, should England qualify.

"I wish he was playing in the World Cup this year. But he will be back for the next one, you know," Cruise said.

The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder will be 39 when the World Cup kicks off in Brazil in 2014.

Of rumours that he might be involved in a film about Beckham, Cruise added: "You know what, I didn't hear that one."
