Author Joe McGinniss has denied accusations that he moved next door to former Alaska governor Sarah Palin in order to spy on her.

McGinniss, who is currently writing a book on the politician, told The Today Show that being in Wasilla is necessary for his work, and that he is there only to talk with Palin's friends and neighbours.

He has called the spying allegations "revolting" and said that they are nothing more than "ugly innuendo".

Palin previously took to her blog over her new neighbour, saying: "Wonder what kind of material he'll gather while overlooking Piper's bedroom, my little garden, and the family's swimming hole?"

McGinniss's book, Sarah Palin's Year of Living Dangerous, is due for release in 2011.
