The 42-year-old actor - who played Arnold in the sitcom - passed away last Friday after suffering a brain haemorrhage following a fall.
Speaking to ET Online, Rae (Edna Garrett) said: "My heart became very heavy, I felt very sad. He was a beautiful soul... He was so adorable, so endearing."
She went on to describe Coleman as a "phenomenon" who was "smart" and "talented" and made the world fall in love with him.
Rae added that Coleman got in touch with her "about ten years ago" because a book was being written about him and he wanted her to talk to the writer, so she took the opportunity to invite Coleman to her home for a catch-up.
"He said, 'Yeah' but he never did. I would have loved it, because we had such a happy time together. He was so adorable."
It was recently reported that Coleman will be laid to rest at a ceremony in Utah this week.
