Like Madonna, Elvis and Cher, Chaim Topol is legendary enough to just need the one name, and is known to us all simply as Topol. Born in Tel Aviv in 1935 - back when the city was part of the British Mandate of Palestine - the actor starred in a number of plays and films before he first trod the boards as Tevye the milkman in Fiddler On The Roof at Her Majesty's Theatre in 1967. He came to international prominence when he reprised the part on the big screen in 1971, winning a 'Best Actor' Golden Globe and Oscar nod the following year.
He occasionally returned to the iconic role and made his farewell appearance as Tevye in Boston, Massachusetts in 2009. In the meantime though, he cemented his cult status with movie-stealing turns in Flash Gordon as scientist Dr Hans Zarkov and smuggler Milos Columbo in Roger Moore Bond movie For Your Your Eyes Only. Now 74 years young, the actor has been cast in upcoming Yiddish-language movie The Golem where he'll play the Frankenstein-esque creator of a clay figure come-to-life to protect the 16th century ghetto of Prague.
