Stereophonics singer Kelly Jones has revealed that Stuart Cable sent him a text message before his death admitting that he "never thought [he'd] make it to 40".

Cable, who died yesterday, spoke to Jones two weeks ago and had arranged to meet him on the day of his death.

The frontman told the BBC: "I texted him on his birthday and said 'happy 40th'. He said 'I never thought I'd make it to 40', and I said 'Well, you'll live to 100'.

"And that's one of the last things we said to each other, which is quite strange really. But he was just a character, wasn't he?"

Cable was fired from the Stereophonics in September 2003. He went on to form Killing For Company and was due to play a gig on Saturday.
