Speaking on the Today Show, Willie and Sue Coleman addressed media reports about the former Diff'rent Strokes actor and said that they hoped the speculation would stop so that everybody could have closure.
"I want his body put away respectfully so we can bring some closure to this part of him," said Sue. "Enough. Let's just put him away so his spirit can go on to where it's going. He's at rest. I know he is and the rest of us need to bring some closure to this."
The couple - who had been estranged from their son - explained that they heard the news about Coleman's accident while they were celebrating a relative's birthday in Arkansas. They said that his ex-wife Shannon Price had left them a message saying that they could contact her brother for further information.
They went on to discuss Coleman's marriage to Price, saying that they were happy when they learned of the nuptials and had hoped he would come home and they could meet their daughter-in-law.
They also said that they would "never have taken money" from their son because that is not the way they were raised and that they have no plans to contest his will. Sue added that they were unaware a will or estate even existed until recently.
When asked if they felt like they had lost their son twice, Willie replied: "We did. We lost him the first time when he turned 21 and from that point on we very rarely heard from him, and when we did, it was mostly through someone else. The last time we lost him, he was lost forever until we cross over some day."
Willie also reflected on the day the couple brought Coleman home following his adoption, saying that they will always remember him as a "loving, kind, gentle human being".
Coleman passed away on May 28 after a fall at his home.
