Albarn: Make Doherty History

Published Friday, Jul 29 2005, 11:37 BST | By Daniel Saney
Damon Albarn has spoken harsh words about Pete Doherty's Live 8 performance, claiming he and his band are overrated and has suggested starting a 'Make Doherty History' campaign.

The Blur / Gorillaz singer said he was "appalled" at Doherty's duet of T.Rex's Children of the Revolution with Sir Elton John for Live 8. The Sun quotes him as saying: "The concert was all about raising awareness, but Peter looked like he was having trouble raising his own awareness - he looked wasted.

"With Africa, we're talking about a nation battling through immense poverty and he can't quite get it together to sing a song. On that day he just seemed like an odd image."

Damon admits that is unable to see what all the fuss is about regarding Doherty's supposed talent. "Babyshambles have only ever released one song. One song!" he exclaimed.

"People talk about this great new talent, but there's nothing to him. He is well overrated. I'm starting a campaign to make Doherty history,"
