Paul Gascoigne is convinced that he is on his "ninth life" following his recent car crash, a report has claimed.

The former England footballer was treated in Newcastle General Hospital last week after a car in which he was a passenger left the road and hit a sign post. A 36-year-old woman suspected of drink driving was arrested and released on police bail.

According to the Daily Star, Gascoigne has since discharged himself from hospital but remains quiet and pensive as he considers the accident and his other previous troubles.

A family friend told the newspaper: "Paul is still in pain and very quiet. I've never seen him so subdued. He knows just how lucky he's been.

"He reckons he's on his ninth life. That means he's run out of lucky breaks so he's got to start taking care of himself. We hope this is the wake-up call he needs to turn his life around."

Gascoigne has hit the headlines with a number of alcohol-related incidents in recent years.
