The 38-year-old was found to have fatal combinations of injectable morphine and the narcotic painkiller fentanyl in his system at the time of death, reports E Online.
Polk County Medical Examiner Dr Gregory Schmunk, who issued the death certificate on Friday, also revealed that Gray suffered from heart disease.
It was said that pills found near his body did not contribute to his death and that he did not have prescriptions for morphine or fentanyl.
Gray was found dead in an Iowa hotel room late last month.
