Speaking to Closer, the singer expressed his admiration for the English-language channel of the Qatar-based broadcaster, which launched in 2006.
Asked what he watches on TV when he is alone, Essex said: "Al Jazeera - an English-language version of the Arabic-language news network. No, really! I think it gives a more balanced view on what's going on out there."
The original Arabic Al Jazeera was founded in 1996 and gained worldwide recognition after the attacks on the US on September 11, 2001, when it aired statements from Al-Qaeda leaders.
Quizzed about his celebrity crushes, Essex added: "Not so much now, but I used to like TV presenter Emma Forbes. She has a lovely personality and is very attractive.
"I met her once a long time ago. It's always a plus when there's something going on in a woman's mind as well as looking good."
